The department started its journey in the year in 1996 with general course. Now it offers courses at UG level both Hons. and Gen. They started Honours from the year of 2004. Prof. Ranjan Kr. Mandal (Asst. Professor) is the head of the department for the last seventeen years. Prof. Kakali Guhathakurata, Prof. Jaya Adhikary Banerjee is serving the department as part-time teacher and Prof. Indrajit Sarkar serving as Guest Lecturer. Both the part-time teachers and Guest Lecturer are trying their best to serve the interests of the students. From the very beginning, Prof. Aditya Ghosh had nourished the department with ardent love and care. Among the teachers who left a deep mark on the students by their scholarship and sincerity are Prof. Biswadeb Chakrabarty and Deblina Ghosh. The teachers who joined the department discharged their duties to the students to their almost efforts. Both teachers and taught took part in seminars organized by the department and in educational excursions to places of historical interests for workshops with the objective of developing historical sense. The department has a seminar library of 75 books which started three years ago for reading as well as lending purposes. In the academic year 2015-2016, the pass percentage was 61%. An appreciable number of ex-students are working as school-level teachers.
